Straight sinus

The straight sinus is a blood conduit of the human brain . It runs at the back of the head. Venous blood flows in it.

What is the straight sinus?

The human brain is supplied by different blood vessels. They consist of arteries , veins and sinus durae matris. Various messenger substances , cells or even blood plasma are transported in them. They supply and activate the different areas of the brain. At the same time, they also transport cerebrospinal fluid away.

There are different deep veins in the human brain. They drain the blood in the diencephalon . They include the vena basalis and the vena interna cerebri. With their branches they supply areas of the basal ganglia , the hypothalamus and the midbrain .

The venae basales and the venae internae cerebri on both sides of the brain finally unite to form the vena magna cerebri. This has a short dorsal course. It flows in the direction of the back and ends there in the straight sinus. At the same time, the inferior saittales sinus ends in the rectus sinus. This previously runs along the lower edge of the falx cerebri . This is the crescent of the brain, which is surrounded by a hard membrane called the dura mater encephali.

The straight sinus continues to the confluens sinuum at the back of the skull. There it flows together with the superior sagittal sinus. This runs along the upper edge of the falx cerebri. The transverse sinus is directed to the left and right of the confluens sinuum. It frames the posterior fossa of the skull.

Function & Tasks

Together with other blood vessels, the straight sinus supplies the brain areas of the occipital area. It drains the surrounding tissue and supplies other deeper veins. He is responsible for the supply of large parts of the back of the head with venous blood . Vital substances are transported with the blood. They include protein-rich blood plasma, hormones , cells or oxygen.

In a few seconds or minutes, these can travel through the various blood vessels from one place to another and unfold their effect there. In particular, transmitters are carried to their respective receptors via the bloodstream. In this way, the individual functions of organs can be activated or even regulated. In addition, cerebrospinal fluid is removed via the rectus sinus. This forms in the various brain ventricles and the spaces between the brain. The cerebrospinal fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid and is excreted through the bladder.
