What helps against constipation?

Dietary fiber is particularly beneficial for digestion . They bind water in the large intestine, swell up and in this way promote intestinal activity. People should consume between 25 and 30 grams of dietary fiber per day. They are mainly found in vegetables such as peas, beans, carrots and white cabbage, but also in cereals, bran and potatoes. Five small snacks each day consisting of fruit such as apples, oranges or pears are recommended.

Other fruits that have a positive effect on digestion are grapes with seeds and watermelons. The minimum daily consumption should be 350 grams of untreated grapes, or half a large melon. This has the most effective effect on its own, without being mixed with other fruits and enjoyed on an empty stomach.

In addition to digestible food, the intestines need enough water to keep them moist. Drinking at least two liters of non-carbonated water a day ensures regular bowel movements and, at the same time, health prophylaxis for all bodily organs.

Until, for example, a change in diet or increased exercise is successful in digestion, fast-acting laxatives from the medicine cabinet can be used.

This includes, first and foremost, the plum juice. The dried fruit, soaked in water overnight, is taken in the morning on an empty stomach along with a glass of the liquid . If you are unsuccessful, you can increase the amount to two glasses. After that, however, you should wait a day, as the effect may appear a little later. The intestine reacts just as stimulated to other dried fruits such as figs.

These are processed in a similar way to the plums, or they are consumed without pre-soaking, together with a large glass of water. The five fruits can be eaten about every three hours until the desired result.

The bark of the slippery elm is also great for constipation. Their natural mucilage surrounds the hardened stools like a lubricant and helps them on their way to the anus. The slippery elm bark is also used for intestinal irritation or chronic intestinal inflammation . A teaspoon of natural olive oil taken in the morning does a similar job.

An enema aligns absolute emergency aid. Using a mini enema, the so-called irrigator, lukewarm water, including herbal tea such as that made from chamomile, is flushed through the anus into the intestine, thereby activating intestinal peristalsis. Intestinal enemas are used for a variety of ailments. They counteract headaches , colds and allergies , for example, by completely emptying the intestines and cleansing .

Alternative remedies

Other alternatives to medication as laxatives are digestive vegetable juices. They are composed of sauerkraut, carrots and tomatoes, possibly with the addition of a pepper or chili pepper for intestinal hygiene. Natural honey also plays a role as a gentle home remedy for activating the intestines, while enjoying coffee also triggers stress in the body. Furthermore, flaxseeds (approx. 5 tablespoons) soaked in water overnight ensure healthy bowel movements.

Exercise is particularly important for physical health. A functional intestine is also dependent on sporting activities. If these have to be canceled due to age or illness, at least gymnastic exercises are advisable. All movements that strain the abdominal muscles also get the intestines going. Exercises are usually done from the supine position or alternatively while sitting on a chair.

Intestinal massage is an option for bedridden patients who are unable to move. It is performed several times a day on the stomach in the direction of the course of the intestines from the bottom right, above the navel to the bottom left and takes about ten minutes each time.
